LAKE CITY, Ark. (WMC/Gray News) - A storm shelter in Arkansas saved the lives of a family whose home was leveled in a tornado Wednesday night.

Morgan Hill said she and her family were sitting in the front room of their house in Lake City when the tornado arrived.

They ran outside the home before it was decimated to get into their storm shelter.

During the tornado’s rampage, the family’s car landed on top of the shelter.

Hill said her family could feel the car land on top of them while they were sheltered in place.

“It was pretty sturdy, but just to feel it, I knew it was a bad tornado,” Hill said.

She also said they were able to see the tornado coming through the door of the shelter from the nearby bay.

“It was just getting bigger and darker,” Hill said. “And we were just like, ‘It’s coming; we got to go.‘”

The Associated Press reported that at least six people were killed by storms in western Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana on Wednesday and Thursday that spawned powerful tornados.
