ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) - Officials say multiple people were injured after a Beyoncé concert Monday night in Atlanta.

According to MARTA officials, nine people were injured in a “stampede” at the Vine City station following the event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as hundreds of concertgoers were heading home.

The transit agency said a person began screaming and running, which triggered the stampede down an escalator at the station.

The escalator sped up before suddenly stopping.

Witness Amber Anderson said it was crowded that night inside the station and once she got on the escalator, she saw people start to run.

“I saw that people were starting to run at the entrance, which, of course, when you see somebody running, you probably want to run, too,” she said.

Anderson said that when the escalator started speeding up, it sent a pile of people to the ground. She said she couldn’t stop herself from winding up in a group of about 20 people all on top of each other.

“I feared suffocation,” she said.

Once the escalator stopped, they were able to start picking each other up, Anderson said.

According to Anderson, her leg got pinned under a man in front of her by the wall and it was still hurting her the following day.

Eight people ended up being taken to the hospital; seven had cuts and scrapes and one had a broken ankle. A ninth person was injured but declined to be taken to the hospital.

Anderson said the group looked for their lost phones and wallets that night, even returning the next day, where necklaces and earrings were still visible in the grate.
